There are many good and bad Havanese breeders. The good breeders will refer you to other good breeders if they do not have a puppy available that will suit your needs. Why would they do this? Because they love the breed and want to make sure all deserving families get the best pet possible!

10 WAYS TO RECOGNIZE AN IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDER

1. No health screenings are done on the parents of the litter.

2. Breeder doesn’t welcome visitors to their home or kennel.

3. Pups are not AKC registered or have a registration other than AKC.

4. Pups are a mixture of Havanese and another breed.

5. No sales contract or health guarantee is provided.

6. Breeder sells all pups on full registration if in fact they are AKC registered. Some may charge more for full registration but any pup you pick can be for the right price purchased on full registration.

8. Breeder isn’t aware of the health problems the Havanese may have.

10. Breeder thinks that if you have a male and a female Havanese you have a good breeding pair.

10 WAYS TO RECOGNIZE A RESPONSIBLE ETHICAL BREEDER

1. Breeder is familiar with the genetic problems of the havanese and does health screenings on all breeding stock./Provides a copy of the parent’s health screenings to the buyer. Breeder guarantees the pet to be free of genetic problems inherent to the breed and addresses these problems in their contract.

2. Breeder uses a sales contract/ A contract protects the buyer, seller, by spelling out the responsibilities of both parties. In the end this protects the puppy..

3. Breeder pays attention to temperament and conformation on every breeding/Breeder doesn’t breed animals with known health or temperament problems..

4. Breeder asks the buyer questions and makes sure the puppy and home are going to be a good match.

5. Breeder lets the vet vaccinate, and de-worm the pups at the appropriate ages and provides an accurate record to the puppy buyers.

6. Breeder is involved in showing or exhibiting their pets.

7. Breeder spays or neuters all pet stock. Breeder will at a minimum follow up on limited registration contracts to see if spay/neuter agreements have been fulfilled. Follow the link below the "10 ways list to recognize a responsible ethical breeder" list to see a webpage with basic information on early spay/neuter. The webpage is small but it has enough of it's own links to keep you busy for many hours.

8. Breeder arranges for permanent identification before the puppy leaves home.

9. Breeder keeps all of their dogs in a clean environment sheltered from the elements and sees that all dogs are vaccinated and have appropriate vet care.

10. Breeder socializes their puppies and knows the individual personalities of every pup in the litter.

11. Breeder assumes a lifetime responsibility for the placement of the puppy should it ever become unwanted. The breeder will take the pup back with no questions asked and keep it or place it in another forever home.

12. Breeder will begin early housebreaking training to assure a good start on housebreaking.

13 Breeder will be there to support and answer questions for the lifetime of the puppy.

14. Breeder may not necessarily be good at counting to 10.

15. Breeder may ramble on and on because they are passionate about what they do./ Be prepared for a long phone conversation.

16. Breeder is convinced that they have the cutest puppies in the world.

17. Breeder loves having their own website because they can put anything on it that they want to and people might read it and laugh.

18 Breeder has a good sense of humor and can laugh easily/ Even at their own jokes!/ Sometimes the breeder might be the only one that thinks she is funny, but that’s ok because she is probably the only one that has kept reading all of the nonsense after #13.

Early spay neuter website with lots of great links

Ok I'm sorry I couldn't figure out how to add the link to the early spay neuter site in the text above. I didn't place the link after all of the silly stuff just to force everyone to read my lame jokes. I really really didn't. Many people have been asking for this link I finally got it up and checked to make sure it was working. I tried a couple of different things but I couldn't get the link in easily. I'll try again one day when I have more time. I just wanted to make sure it was on tonight because so many people have been asking about it. I hope lots of other breeders read it and talk to their own vets about early S/N!
